Bopaya Bidanda receives Albert Holzman Distinguished Educator Award at IIE annual conference

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (May 20, 2013) ...  Bopaya Bidanda, PhD , Ernest E. Roth Professor and Chair of Industrial Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering, was honored at the Institute of Industrial Engineers' annual conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico, with one of the organization's top awards. Dr. Bidanda was named the 2013 recipient of the  Albert G. Holzman Distinguished Educator Award , which recognizes educators who contributed significantly to the profession through teaching, research and publication, extension, innovation or administration.

The award is especially significant to the Swanson School because it is named after the late  Dr. Holzman , a Pitt alumnus who received his bachelor's and master's degrees in industrial engineering and PhD in economics from the University of Pittsburgh. He was also past chair of the Department of Industrial Engineering and the first industrial engineer elected to the National Academy of Engineering.

About Dr. Bidanda
Dr. Bidanda joined the department in 1987 upon completing his doctoral studies at Pennsylvania State University and also is the Co-Director of the Manufacturing Assistance Center at the University of Pittsburgh. He has industrial experience in manufacturing systems, tools, and precision manufacturing. His research focus includes computer integrated manufacturing systems, time compression technologies such as rapid prototyping and reverse engineering, and global supply networks and product realization. He helped found the Swanson Center for Product Innovation and the Manufacturing Assistance Center.

Dr. Bidanda works closely with manufacturing industries in Western Pennsylvania in the area of cellular manufacturing, work measurement, automatic data collection, and shopfloor information systems. He has published widely in international journals and conference proceedings. He has authored/edited four books and has been the conference chair of both the Industrial Engineering Research Conference and the IIE Solutions Conference. He is a fellow of the Institute of Industrial Engineers and has previously served as the chair of the Council of Industrial Engineering Academic Department Heads (CIEADH) and as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE).
