Pitt Named Best Value in State for 13th Time

Kiplinger’s ranks Pitt the best value in public higher education in Pennsylvania

University of Pittsburgh News Release

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh has again been named to Kiplinger’s Personal Finance’s list of 100 best-value public colleges nationwide. And, for the 13th consecutive year, the University ranks as the top value among all public colleges and universities in Pennsylvania.

“Paying for college is one of the most significant and life-changing investments that a family can make,” said Chancellor Patrick Gallagher. “At the University of Pittsburgh, we are committed to providing a world-class education at an exceptional value — and it’s an investment that yields immense and lifelong returns for our graduates.”

The 2018 ranking cites four-year schools that combine an outstanding education with affordable cost. Kiplinger’s assesses value according to measurable standards, including the admission rate, percentage of students who return for sophomore year, student-faculty ratio and four-year graduation rate. Cost criteria include sticker price, financial aid and average debt at graduation. Kiplinger’s also compiles lists of 100 private universities and 100 private liberal arts colleges with the best value.

“Our rankings, which weigh affordability alongside academic quality, are a great resource for students and their parents when sorting through college choices,” said Mark Solheim, editor of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine. “We start with a universe of nearly 1,200 schools and trim the list using measures of academic quality. We then rank the schools based on cost and financial aid data. All 300 schools on our list are worth a look.”

The complete rankings are accessible online at kiplinger.com/links/college. The rankings also will appear in the February 2018 issue of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, which will be available on newsstands Jan. 9.
