Pitt to host 2013 Institute of Industrial Engineers Northeast Regional Conference

PITTSBURGH  (March 4, 2013) … The March 8 registration deadline is approaching for the  Institute of Industrial Engineers Northeast Regional Conference  in Pittsburgh, hosted by the University of Pittsburgh's Student Chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers. The conference. This year's event at the Univeristy of Pittsburgh will be March 22-24 at the University's William Pitt Union.

The Institute of Industrial Engineers University Regional Conferences provides an opportunity for networking and sharing recent research experiences. The main focus of the conference is the Undergraduate Student Technical Paper Competition. Undergraduates compose papers on research they've done and give fifteen minute presentations in front of their peers and a panel of at least three judges. Monetary awards are given for the first, second, and third place winners at an Awards Banquet that same evening. The first place winners of each regional conference are entered into the international competition, whose top three winners will be announced at IIE's Annual Conference and Expo.

Lectures will be given by a panel of speakers who volunteer their time and are chosen by the host university, such as recent graduates who can easily connect with current undergrads and provide advice on academics and the journey after graduation, and engineering professionals who can illustrate what is possible to accomplish with a degree in industrial engineering.

This year's list of plenary speakers includes Pitt alumni Ann Samler, Vice President of Solution Design at GENCO; John Innocenti, President of UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside; and Daniel May, Senior Vice President of Supply Chain at Giant Eagle. Evening speakers include Bopaya Bidanda, PhD, Ernest E. Roth Professor and Chair of Industrial Engineering at Pitt; and Mel Schubert, Site Director, Lockheed Martin, retired.

Hosted by the University of Pittsburgh's Student Chapter of IIE, the conference is a way to bring together students from the chapters comprising the northeast region and to make inter-university connections. The conference committee will be conducting tours around campus as well as around the city as ice breakers for the students. It's a chance "to showcase not only our IE department but the university, campus and city as well" says Annie Jones, the student chair of this year's northeast conference. Students will also take an exciting trip to Mount Washington via trolley. "So, not only is it an excellent opportunity for students to learn and network, but to relax and enjoy the city of Pittsburgh, too."
