Ten Swanson School of Engineering Professors Among 2026 Faculty Convocation Honorees
The University of Pittsburgh has recognized ten Swanson School of Engineering professors as part of its 2026 Faculty Honors Convocation. These educators and researchers are celebrated for their important contributions to their field, the University, and the broader community.
Sylvanus Wosu, associate professor of mechanical engineering and materials science and Associate Dean for Diversity Affairs, received the 2026 Chancellor’s Distinguished Public Service Award for his work developing community and engagement throughout the University.
Brandon Grainger and Robert Kerestes, both associate professors in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, have been honored with the 2026 Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award, highlighting their dedication to excellence and innovation in engineering education. Grainger, an Eaton Faculty Fellow, also directs the Electric Power Technologies Lab, and co-directs the Energy GRID Institute and Pitt AMPED. Kerestes is the Director of the Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Program.
These three awardees will receive a $2,000 cash prize and a $3,000 grant to support research.
Additionally, Pitt recognized two Swanson School professors recently appointed as distinguished professors or endowed chairs in 2025. Melissa Bilec was named the George M. and Eva M. Bevier Endowed Chair in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. David Vorp received the title Distinguished Professor of Bioengineering.
Albert To was recognized with the 2026 Provost’s Award for Excellence in Doctoral Mentoring, reflecting his commitment to guiding and developing the next generation of materials science and mechanical engineering researchers.
The University also recognized four professors who were acknowledged on the national and international level for exceptional contributions to their fields:
- Bopaya Bidanda was inducted into the SME College of Fellows by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.
- Kent A. Harries received the Delmar L Bloem Distinguished Service Award from the American Concrete Institute.
- Fang Zheng Peng was elected to the National Academy of Engineering.
- Gelsy Torres-Oviedo was named an AIMBE Emerging Leader by the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.
“These prestigious awards reflect the individual achievements of our wonderful faculty and the collective work happening at the Swanson School,” said Patrick Loughlin, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and professor of bioengineering. “In addition to developing groundbreaking technology that is solving real-world problems, these highly accomplished colleagues are preparing and inspiring the next generation of engineers.”
Michele Manuel, U. S. Steel Dean of Engineering, added, “I am incredibly proud of our faculty members who have been recognized for their hard work and passion. Their achievements are a testament to the Swanson School's commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and community outreach. I am excited to see how they will continue to push the boundaries of engineering, science, and technology.”
All awardees will be recognized at the Faculty Honors Convocation on Tuesday, March 31, in Alumni Hall at the University of Pittsburgh in Oakland.
