CEE Seeking Postdoc in Environmental Microbiology

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is seeking a motivated postdoctoral scholar to work on a transdisciplinary research team tackling the challenge of microbial resistance in premise plumbing. We are a team of engineers and scientists investigating the influence of shower head chemistry on the microbial community and opportunistic pathogen abundance in shower water, and particularly, the potential to induce the viable but non-culturable state. The position will require you to collaborate across disciplines to tackle research that incorporates microbiology, environmental engineering, and chemistry. The position will be through the Civil and Environmental Engineering department at the University of Pittsburgh with PIs Haig and Gilbertson with collaboration from Co-PI’s: Millstone (Department of Chemistry) and Stout (Special Pathogens Laboratory).

Logistics of the position

Start Date: as soon as possible, no later than January 2022

Length of term: 1 year (with potential to extend, depending on funding and performance)

Primary Advisor: Dr. Sarah Haig, Assistant Professor of Environmental Engineering

Secondary Advisor: Dr. Leanne Gilbertson, Associate Professor of Environmental Engineering

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Microbiology, Public Health or a related field.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work independently to tackle research tasks as well as collaborate with an interdisciplinary team
  • Experience with 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, bioinformatics, ddPCR and/ or building plumbing is preferred.
