ChemE Associate Professor Giannis Mpourmpakis Receives Provost’s Award

Mpourmpakis is being recognized for his dedication and success mentoring doctoral students at the Swanson School

Giannis Mpourmpakis, associate professor and Bicentennial Alumni faculty fellow of chemical and petroleum engineering at the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering, is among a select group of scholars for this year’s Provost’s Award for Excellence in Doctoral Mentoring.

The award recognizes Mpourmpakis’ commitment to mentoring and working with doctoral students to achieve their goals in a welcoming and supportive environment. Because of Mpourmpakis’ mentorship, doctoral students in Pitt’s program have been recognized with the National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) and gone on to have flourishing careers at top academic institutions and industry as well as one prestigious fellowship position at a National Laboratory.

“I’m deeply honored by this recognition,” Mpourmpakis said. “However, the true reward is seeing the doctoral students I’ve worked with at Pitt achieving their career goals, making lasting contributions advancing science and engineering and benefiting the society.”

Recipients of the Provost’s Award for Excellence in Doctoral Mentoring receive a cash prize of $2,500 and will be recognized at an event on March 20, 2024.
