ECE Professor Sam Dickerson Recognized with Provost’s Award

Dickerson received praise for his work in undergraduate advising

Samuel Dickerson, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering, is an advocate for student success first, and a professor second.

Dickerson, who also serves as vice chair for education and director of computer engineering undergraduate program, recently received the 2024 Provost’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising for his individual efforts and programming in preparing students for lives of impact through educational experiences tailored to their specific goals and needs.

“It’s truly a privilege to work with students and help them understand their big picture goals,” Dickerson said. “It’s extremely satisfying when I see them land their dream job.”

In his nomination letter, Dickerson’s colleagues noted his innovation, empathy, and compassion for students and their needs. Dickerson also brings his personal experience as a program alumnus, having earned his bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD at the Swanson School.

The 2024 Provost’s Award for Excellence recognizes advisors who have engaged students in a collaborative and holistic process of advising by preparing them for lives of impact through educational experiences tailored to their specific goals and needs.

Those recognized receive a $1,000 award and a grant of $1,500 to support professional development activities.

Dickerson will be honored among peers publicly on Wednesday, March 27 from 3:30-4:30 pm.
