From the Lab to the Trail

Students in the MCSI Summer Research Program Volunteer with Friends of South Side Park in Service Project

Sometimes, in sustainability research, you’ve got to get your hands dirty.

Students in the Undergraduate Summer Research Program at the University of Pittsburgh Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation (MCSI) volunteered with Friends of South Side Park on Friday, July 14. The students removed invasive knotweed, planted trees and shrubs, installed an irrigation system, and performed trail maintenance.

The service project was one of two that the students in the undergraduate research program. For the first, students worked on trail maintenance and invasive plant removal with the Pymatuning Lab of Ecology and Western Pennsylvania Conservancy in May.
