Two industrial engineering students awarded IISE scholarships

Two undergraduate students at the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering have been awarded scholarships from the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers for 2022-2023.

Nicole Lipa and Gloria Givler, both seniors studying industrial engineering, are considered exemplary students by the department. The Institute of Industrial and Systems of Engineers scholarship program recognizes “graduate and undergraduate industrial engineering students for academic excellence and campus leadership.” To be eligible, students must have a grade point average over 3.4. Awards are valued up to $4,000.

“Gloria has a near perfect GPA and is completing her third co-op rotation at Seegrid this semester," said Karen Bursic, professor and undergraduate program director for industrial engineering. "Nicole completed her co-op rotation at Connors Group this past summer and is studying abroad in Italy for the fall semester.”

Lipa, recipient of the Harold and Inge Marcus Scholarship, recently finished her co-op at Connors Group, a management consultancy, where she worked as an analyst. On campus, she is the vice president of professional development for Pitt’s Society of Women Engineers. She is also involved in Incline Consulting Group, a student-run organization that offers pro-bono strategic and technology consulting to nonprofit organizations.

“I would like to thank IISE and those who wrote my nominations: Dr. Jourdain Lamperski, Kaitlyn Washko, and Dr. Karen Bursic. I am looking forward to continuing my work in the industrial engineering and data science fields,” Lipa said.

Givler, recipient of the Dwight D. Gardner Scholarship, is in her third co-op rotation at Seegrid, an automated material handling equipment company located in Pittsburgh. She is also the mentorship chair for Pitt’s Society of Women Engineers and volunteers with All in PA to help students register to vote. She said she is honored to receive this award.

“I would like to thank the scholarship fund trustees at IISE, along with the following people who nominated and served as references for me: Dr. Karen Bursic, Dr. Renee Clark, Dr. Michael Sherwin and Scott Shaffer.”
